about

Buchan Sunsets Volume 1 is the first (of hopefully) a series of compilations of artists with links to the region of Buchan in NE Scotland.
An eclectic mix of styles encompassing some stories and themes relating to the area and it’s coastal nature, but also multi-cultural in welcoming music from around the globe, to this beautiful corner of Scotland.

A theme of encouraging collaboration runs through the comp, with notable local and long distant recordings winging across the internet.

Their has been a desire to capture local artists and long term musical friends for their first release on Village Sunsets, notably our own Soul Diva; Lynne Taylor and Moroccan artist Omar Bin Mohamed Afif.

Various artists have provided specially commissioned songs:- Fisher of Gold, John Mackie, Lynne Taylor, The Fonsecas (1st ever release of demo track from upcoming album), a reworking of a Kitchen Cynics track and The Oxbow Lake Band’s comic live sound check of their track 'Neanderthal Blues', (waiting for the Organ to work, the Trombonist is asked to "Keep Going!").
I would doubt these tracks will appear anywhere else again, unless stated.
Plus we have a taster of 2 tracks from the upcoming release 'Irreverent Melodies' from The Internationalist.

Equally some of the best album releases from around the Buchan area have been pillaged for a track or two, hence the Fiona Soe Paing and The Carousels track, with kind thanks to them and their record companies, all of which are noted in the track dialogue. Plus the track 'Let you go' from Village Sunsets own The Oxbow Lake Band's recent EP 'Hypocrisy & Hope'.

We really hope this provides a snap shot of the fantastic talents of the musicians of this region and leads to further unique collaborations.
Cheers.

Backstories:-

Lynne Taylor, Soul diva, Belly Dancer and local ‘Postie’!
Lynne ‘The Post’ blew away a music session in the Buchan village of Cruden Bay, with her belting bluesy soul vocal and endless passion for music. She immediately started Andy Oxbow thinking of tunes for her to sing and record, until finally her first release was conjured up! A ‘Clunky’ modern take on 60’s styled soul with strong social lyrics, this exclusive (to this comp) track will hopefully see her obvious talents brought to the attention of all music lovers.

Kitchen Cynics AKA Alan Davidson, painter, folklorist, music maker and retired art teacher.
We don’t have sufficient space to do justice to Alan’s extensive output here, but for this comp it’s worth noting his success in capturing and/or promoting the music and tales of the NE of Scotland and appreciating the personal dreamscapes he’s able to create as backdrops to these stories. Truly beautiful creations, with this exclusively re-recorded version. He has a new album just out too (search Bandcamp). Alan needs to take credit for inspiring such roots collaborations and eclectic compilations.

John Mackie, Poet.
Based in Banff on Buchan’s north coast, John is London swinging 60’s personified, as are his Poet credentials which go back in his blood line to Sorley MacLean and the Gaelic poets of Raasay. John releases poetry on both paper and with various musical partners, including having worked with Roger Bunn composing for David Bowie.

Fisher of Gold aka Joe Kingman, Ex-We Free Kings front man (Wild Folk Punk band, who left a legacy in the 80's still resonating today!) and electronica studio maestro!
Joe is Belgium based, but memories of his childhood in Buchan and Aberdeen, consistently inform his music, notably the village of Collieston (Village Sunsets HQ) where his Granny cooked Eels for tea and, as a child, he knew every stone on the beach…….

The Carousels, Songwriters extraordinaire.
I could whittle on about jangly 12 string Rickenbacker’s, alt. country and 60’s psyche leanings, but all that would do is disguise or sugar coat and thus remove the focus from The Carousels abilities to write brilliantly arranged pop songs. From the heart of Rural Aberdeenshire; a town called ‘Keith’…..Buy their records on label ‘You are the Cosmos’!

Fiona Soe Paing, Electronica artist.
Fiona’s recent, highly acclaimed, album ‘Alien Lullabies’ was accompanied by an animated film by Zennor Alexander and shown at various events around the UK. Available on both CD + DVD from bandcamp.
A truly unique artist, oozing creativity from depths of Buchan…. In this track, singing in the native tongue of her father.

Omar Bin Mohamed Afif, Gnawa musician and chef.
Omar has been artist in residence at Deveron arts recently, where he was again able to combine his love of music and North African cuisine, within the Buchan community. Residence of Banff on the north coast of Buchan, his Fusion music and food nights are highly recommended and are starting to pop up around the country. Keep an eye (nose and ear) out for them!

The Fonsecas, Sunshine song smiths
Musical adventures, with no sounds out of bounds (as long as they're sunshiney!). Demo of one track, which may be on their Album, out hopefully in 2017 (although they have too many, so this may go no further...).

The Oxbow Lake Band, 8 piece funky bombardment of irreverence and merriment.
The Oxbows members hail from over the north of Scotland with a firm fixing in Village Sunsets HQ; the Buchan village of Collieston.
They are seekers of good time tunes, heavy in horns and Hammond, with an underlying social, romantic or political message. Village Sunsets release their material, formats being notably influenced by a love of vinyl and even cassettes!
Special thanks to Michael Legge Soundman extraordinaire for recording while rushing around trying to get sound working!.

The Internationalist, manic ethno musical magpie.
EP Irreverent melodies will be available in 2017, individually handmade and designed! how about that!
Enough said.
